NW-SCC to host Industry Night for BEST Robotics on September 10
August 30, 2019
MUSCLE SHOALS, ALA. -- Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) will host students from 20 area schools for the 2019 Northwest Alabama BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) Robotics Industry Night on Tuesday, September 10th.
BEST Robotics Industry Night will be open to the public and will be held at the NW-SCC Shoals campus from 4:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Career technical programs will have their areas open to assist BEST Robotics students with the creation of their robots. “This is a great opportunity for the College to mentor our middle and high school students,” said NW-SCC President Dr. Glenda Colagross. “Many of our area schools do not have easy access to technologies we have in our career technical areas, and we want to help them be successful in any way we can.” The event will have a tailgating theme with foods available in different areas of the College.
The BEST Robotics season kicked-off last Saturday, August 24th, on the Shoals campus for all area teams. The theme for this year’s competition is OFF THE GRID, which is all about Electricity. “BEST teams are in the research stage of the competition currently,” stated Co-Hub Director for Northwest Alabama BEST Robotics Kim Sheppard. “The students will have an opportunity at Industry Night to view exhibits and visit with area electricity professionals and industry representatives.” Industry booths will be set-up to display information for BEST Robotics students.
Following BEST Industry Night, local teams will display and practice using their robots at Mall Day on September 21. Teams will then compete at Game Day on October 5 in the gym at the NW-SCC Shoals Campus. The top three winning teams will advance to South’s BEST Regional Championship at Auburn University, December 7-8, 2019.
Northwest Alabama BEST Robotics is a workforce development partnership between the Shoals Chamber of Commerce and Northwest-Shoals Community College. Each fall, over 850 middle and high schools and over 18,000 students participate in the competition nationwide. For more information visit https://www.nwalbest.com.
