Upward Bound

Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.

Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree.

The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

Upward Bound programs are funded by the United States Department of Education.

What should I expect out of the program during the regular school year?

Services/Activities Offered:

Weekly tutoring sessions at your high school.
Individual, Group, Career, and Academic Advising.
Saturday visits to Northwest-Shoals Community College, Shoals Campus for workshops on values, careers, and study skills.
Field trips to places of educational, recreational, or cultural interest.
Transportation and lunches furnished on campus and on all scheduled trips.
Pay $8.00 for each week student participates.

What should I expect out of the program during the Summer component?

Live in dormitories at Northwest-Shoals Community College, Shoals Campus, 5 weeks.
Individual tutoring and academic advising.
College level courses (tuition paid).
Field Trips.
Athletics and group activities.
Most transportation and all meals furnished on scheduled trips.
Year-end 2 to 3 day educational / recreational / cultural trip.
$8.00 per week.
