                                                MLA Documentation by Linda Smoak Schwartz

 

Required Supplies:                2 IBM formatted diskettes – HD/DS

 

Suggested Supplies:               a college-level dictionary and a thesaurus

 

General Information:  Students are expected to arrive for class on time and not leave until dismissed.  Students are responsible for keeping up with assignments and material covered in class even when they are absent.  Any missed material will not be re-taught by the instructor.  Students should be certain all pagers and cell phones are turned off before coming to class.

 

Class Attendance Policy:  Because class attendance is considered to be essential to the accomplishment of course objectives, excessive absences are discouraged.  At no time should a student miss more than six  (6) classes (20% of total class meetings for a course).  These absences include any absences accrued during late registration.  Students are discouraged from missing any class meeting unless an emergency arises.  Students who miss more than 20% of total classes will receive an “F” for the course.

 

Make-up Policy:  It is each student’s responsibility to remain aware of class activities, even during and absence.  Students who fail to complete a test or an essay because of absence must schedule a make-up time during my office hours.  Any assignment (test, essay, or research component) not completed within one week of the due date will receive the grade of zero (0).  This does not apply to the final due date for Research Papers.  No Research Paper will be accepted after the final due date.

 

Conferences:  Students are encouraged to schedule a conference any time during the semester about their progress and improvement.

 

Grading Policy:  The semester grade will be based on the average of the following:

                                    Tests – (4 as scheduled on the syllabus plus

                                                   quizzes)                                                         33%

Essays – (4 as scheduled on the syllabus)                      33%

                                    Research Paper – (graded for structure, content,

                                                                  grammar, documentation, and

                                                                  progress)                                        33%    

 

Plagiarism Policy:  Plagiarism is considered cheating; therefore, students committing plagiarism WILL receive a 0 for the plagiarized document as well as the grade of F for the semester. (See pages 162-163 in MLA Documentation handbook for definition of plagiarism).

                                 

Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA ): It is the policy of NWSCC to comply with this act.  Any student covered under this act needing and deserving reasonable accommodations for this class should notify the instructor by the end of the second week of class.
