TUESDAY, MAY 8TH: COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAMS:
If your class meets at 9:30, your EXAM is 8:00-10:00
If your class meets at 12:45, your EXAM is 10:30-12:30
COURSE GRADES: Each exam, speech, or presentation grade counts equally. The total grade for summary cards counts the same as a regular speech.
All speeches are graded in terms of content, organization (including a mandatory outline for each speech), delivery, note cards, research (when appropriate), and visual aids (when appropriate). Outline, note cards and, when appropriate, a written bibliography will be turned in for all speeches. You will be given a graded evaluation sheet for each speech.
SUMMARY CARDS: Students must read eight magazine articles, record the source using the correct format, and summarize the thesis or main idea of the article: that is, condense the main idea in your own words. Use 4 X 6 cards for this assignment. Eight summary cards, worth 12.5 points each, are required for this class; due dates are noted in your schedule above. Late cards will be penalized one point per day. Follow required formats exactly.
PROPER BIBLIOGRAPHICAL FORMAT (MLA): Students should follow the proper format exactly in preparing summary cards and bibliographies for the various speeches. All outside information must be documented, that is, attributed to the correct source, using the correct form. Standard MLA formats are given in the Wadsworth Guide to MLA Documentation.
WRITTEN EXAMS: Exams come from your textbook and class notes and are mainly short answer with one or two discussion questions. Study sheets will be provided well in advance.
ATTENDANCE AND MISSED WORK: Students with more than six unexcused absences may fail the course. Make-ups are not allowed without a reasonable, written, documented excuse. All make-up work must be completed within one week of the due date. I do not accept late work once final exams have begun.
CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE: NEVER open the door while a student is giving a speech. TURN OFF all cell phones, beepers, and alarms. Do not bring food into the classroom (unless it’s for a demonstration speech).
