Distance Education Student Handbook

About Distance Courses

Distance courses are offered as an option for today's busy college students needing an alternative to traditional on-campus classes.  However, distance courses follow the same strict standards for instruction and grading applied in on-campus courses.

Students register for distance courses during the regular registration period, pay the same tuition, have access to the same student services, receive the same credit, and study under the same regulations as all other students.

Most distance course exams are completed in one of the on-campus testing centers at the student's convenience.  (See Testing Centers for more details on the testing centers.)

To successfully complete TeleWeb and Web courses, students will need a home computer with Windows XP or higher, Internet Explorer version 6.0 or higher.  For TeleWeb courses, student will also need access to a TV and VCR/DVD player.  Some videos are available as podcasts through the iTunes Music store.

ENG101, ENG102, ENG271, ENG272 require the use of Microsoft Word.  CIS146, CIS157, and CIS148 require the use of Microsoft Office 2007.  CIS249 requires the use of Microsoft Windows XP.

Northwest-Shoals Community College offers classes in  several different formats:

Telecourses
