Course Description:

This course explores principles of audience and environment analysis as well as the actual planning, rehearsing and presenting of formal speeches to specific audiences.  Historical foundations, communication theories and student performances are emphasized.

Additional Technology Requirements :
Computer with Internet Access (preferably DSL Connection or Higher)
A word processing software program such as Microsoft Office or OpenOffice
Personal E-Mail Address (Yahoo, Gmail, etc.)
Lab Information:
Students are not required to attend an on-campus lab for this course.  However, students will be expected to come to campus to complete four speeches or video themselves using a digital camera in front of an audience of 8-10. 

Students also have access to computers in campus computer labs, libraries, and career centers if needed to complete course assignments..

Going to Campus : There are no on-campus exams required for this course.  However, students must come to campus a minimum of four times to complete speeches in front of an audience. Students will be required to prepare and bring visual aids with them for two of the required speeches.
Special Attendance Requirements : Students must come to campus to complete four speeches in front of a live audience or video themselves in front of an audience of 8-10.

Course Requirements & Assignments:
Please refer to course syllabus. The syllabus will be posted for registered students in Blackboard and will be available by the end of the second day of classes.  A sample course syllabus is linked here.  However, the instructor reserves the right to modify the course syllabus and assignments at his/her discretion.

Textbooks:  Invitation to Public Speaking.  3rd ed. Griffin, Cindy L.,
 
MLA Handbook
 
 
Software Requirements:  Students will need to type, print and save documents in Microsoft Word (.doc) format.  Students may use Writer to complete course assignments.  Writer is the word processing software program available for FREE download from OpenOffice.org.

Recommended Supplies:  128 MB Flash Drive
Flash drive will be used to store assignments until they are submitted in Blackboard.
Students must also prepare visual aids for two of the required speeches.

Tuition & Fees:

Distance education students will pay $110 per credit hour enrolled.  This equals $330 for a 3 credit hour course or $440 for a four credit hour class.
