November 10, 2011 -- NW-SCC Phil Campbell Campus to Celebrate 30th Year of "Toyland"

Lanny McAlister celebrates the 30th anniversary of his creation, the Legend of Toyland

Phil Campbell, AL -- The Legend of Toyland, a holiday theatrical performance that traditionally opens the holiday season commemorates its 30th year with public performances beginning Friday, December 2, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in the gymnasium on the Phil Campbell Campus of Northwest-Shoals Community College.

According to Lanny McAlister, director and creator of "Toyland", the area has truly embraced the annual production over the years making it the most successful and longest running Christmas production in the state. The college production has attracted audiences of all ages from all over the state and is viewed by over 10,000 people annually.

"I get questions year round about what new sections we are going to add this year. We are so thankful for the continued support from the community over the past 29 years," said McAlister. "It is this continued support that has truly made 'The Legend of Toyland' what it is today"

Four public performances are scheduled December 2nd through December 4th.

Tickets for public performances are $8.00 and are available at the Northwest-Shoals Community College Phil Campbell cashier’s office or can be reserved with credit card by calling (256) 331-6382 until 3pm Wednesday, November 30th. Any remaining tickets may be purchased at the door prior to each performance.

November 9, 2011-- NW-SCC Phil Campbell Campus presents the Annual Fall Concert November 17th

Phil Campbell, AL -- Northwest-Shoals Community College's Music Department will hold its annual Fall Concert, Thursday, November 17, 2011, at 7:30 P.M. in the Lou B. Bevill Fine Arts Center on the Phil Campbell Campus.

The Fall Concert will feature two of the college's musical groups: The Northwest-Shoals Chorale directed by Jeff McAlister and The Northwest-Shoals Jazz Ensemble directed by George Crummie.

Admission is $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for students/senior adults. Tickets are available at the cashier's office on both campuses and at the door. For more information, please call Jeff McAlister at 256.331.6299.

Muscle Shoals & Phil Campbell, AL -- Four Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) employees were recognized last week at the 2011 Chancellor's Awards luncheon in Montgomery.

Chancellor's Awards are given annually in four categories: Administrator of the Year, Academic Faculty Member of the Year, Technical Faculty Member of the Year and Support Staff Member of the Year. Each community college within the state nominates one employee for each of the previously mentioned categories. The 2011 nominees for NW-SCC were:

November 1, 2011 -- Local Students Inducted into Phi Theta Kappa During Fall Ceremonies at NW-SCC

Muscle Shoals & Phil Campbell, AL -- Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) recently inducted 44 students into the Alpha Zeta Iota (Phil Campbell campus) and Alpha Sigma Beta (Shoals campus) chapter of Phi Theta Kappa during the organization's fall induction ceremonies.

Induction into Phi Theta Kappa is held twice a year at NW-SCC on each campus, once in the fall and once in the spring. Students who earn a 3.5 GPA for 12 or more credit hours the previous semester are invited to join the national community college honor society.

October 3, 2011 -- NW-SCC Foundation to Feature Nationally Renowned Author, Rick Bragg October 17

Muscle Shoals, AL. -- Northwest-Shoals Community College's (NW-SCC) Foundation will hold "Rick Bragg Day in the Shoals" and culminate the day with the 19th Annual Pathfinder's Dinner Monday, October 17, 2011.

The NW-SCC Foundation will provide "Rick Bragg Day in the Shoals" at Ritz Theater in Sheffield on October 17th beginning at 10:00 a.m. The event will provide Shoals area residents an opportunity to view notable author, Rick Bragg's, recently released documentary, "Out of the Dirt." The community will also have an opportunity to have lunch with Rick Bragg at 11:30 a.m. and enjoy a chance to meet Bragg and have their book signed. Books and a DVD of the documentary will be available for purchase.

The annual Pathfinder's Dinner will conclude the day at the Listerhill banquet room. The dinner will be preceded with a silent auction at 6:00 p.m. and dinner beginning at 7:00 p.m. The evening will feature keynote speaker, Rick Bragg. Music and entertainment will include Dr. Eric Kirkman and the Northwest-Shoals Community College Jazz Band directed by George Crummie.

Rick Bragg, born in Piedmont, Ala., is an American author and journalist known for his non-fiction books, especially those on his family in Alabama. Bragg won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing in 1996 for his work at The New York Times.

Bragg has authored five books: "{All Over but the Shoutin","Ava's Man", "The Prince of Frogtown", "I Am a Soldier Too: The Jessica Lynch Story" and "The Most They Ever Had."

Bragg has told stories and taught writing at Harvard University, Boston University, the University of South Florida, and other colleges. He now works as a writing professor at the University of Alabama's journalism program in its College of Communications and Information Sciences.

Proceeds from the day's events will go to the NW-SCC Foundation Scholarship Fund.
