June 28, 2011 -- NW-SCC students win State and place in top five at National SkillsUSA Championships
Muscle Shoals, AL -- Northwest-Shoals Community College carpentry and cabinetmaking students traveled to Kansas City, Missouri, last week to compete at the 47th annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference.
Peter Burge of Harvest, Alabama, placed first in the cabinetmaking category and Titus Grisham of Killen, Alabama, placed first in the carpentry category at the Alabama SkillsUSA competition held in Birmingham to become eligible to compete in the national competition. Grisham and Burge followed up their state performance last week with a fourth and fifth place showing, respectively, at the SkillsUSA National Championships.
"After a great performance at the state competition this year, we felt that we had the top program in the state and would be very competitive at Nationals," NW-SCC carpentry instructor Charles Hardy said. "We are very proud of our students and how hard they have worked this year."
"Each year our goal at Northwest-Shoals is to win the National Carpentry and Cabinetmaking contest," stated Hardy. "We have been very consistent by placing in the top 10 each year. However, this year we achieved the top five in both areas. We are very proud of that."
The National SkillsUSA Cabinetmaking Competition required students build a small cabinet from materials and drawings supplied. Contestants are expected to read the drawings, lay out and cut the parts using a table saw, laminate trimmer, hand drill, hinge boring machine and various hand tools. The parts must be accurately assembled, sanded and adjusted to tolerances specified by the judges.
The Carpentry Competition required students frame walls using wood and or metal steel studs, cut and install rafters, gable end overhangs, fascia board and soffit installation, install sheathing and or exterior siding and trim. Demonstration of knowledge of stair construction is required. Contestants will be judged on accuracy, ability to read and interpret blueprints, workmanship, safety and the proper use of tools, equipment and materials.
The 2011 SkillsUSA National Championships placed over 5,600 outstanding career and technical education students against each other in elite hands on competition in 94 different trade, technical, and leadership fields.

May 13, 2011 -- NW-SCC to Operate on Four and a Half Day Week beginning May 23rd; Summer Open Registration May 23th
Muscle Shoals & Phil Campbell, AL -- Northwest-Shoals Community College
(NW-SCC) will go to a four and a half day (Monday-Friday) summer work/class schedule beginning May 23rd.
The College will close at 12 pm noon on Fridays during the summer semester beginning May 27th. However, the NW-SCC Child Development Center will continue operating on a normal five day week schedule.
According to NW-SCC President, Dr. Humphrey Lee, the decision was made due to the positive feedback and success of the four day schedule last summer.
"We got great feedback last summer and saved nearly $14,000 in operational costs over a 12 week period," said Lee. "We chose to go with the four and a half day week this summer in order to not inhibit us from serving our students for at least part of the day on Fridays."
The state Board of Education voted in 2009 to allow Alabama's community colleges to pursue alternatives to the standard five-day work week.
Summer semester open registration will be held on both the Muscle Shoals & Phil Campbell campuses, Monday, May 23, 2011. Registration on the Shoals campus will be held in the Workforce Development Center (Bldg. 127) while registration on the Phil Campbell campus will be held in the Wallace Administration Building (Building 301). Open registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. break for lunch at 12:00 p.m. and resume for the afternoon session at 5:00 p.m. and conclude at 7:00 p.m.
Summer classes begin Wednesday, May 25th. For more information or to obtain a copy of the summer semester schedule, call (256) 331-5200 or visit the Northwest-Shoals Community College website at www.nwscc.edu.
