July 14, 2008 -- NW-SCC to Offer Displaced Tiffin Motor Homes Employees Tuition Waiver
Muscle Shoals & Phil Campbell, AL -- As of the 2008 fall semester, Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) will extend a 50 percent tuition waiver to all displaced Tiffin Motor Homes employees who have become unemployed as a result ot recent layoffs.
NW-SCC President, Mr. Humphrey Lee has decided to assist the 296 employees seeking training or retraining through programs offered by Northwest-Shoals Community College. The tuition waiver of 50 percent will be granted to eligible displaced workers of Tiffin Motor Homes (Red Bay, AL) enrolling in college beginning fall 2008 and ending fall 2010. This waiver will assist displaced workers in securing the necessary skills to re-enter the workforce.
The Alabama Community College System seeks to provide accessible quality educational opportunities, promote economic growth and enhance the quality of life for the people of Alabama. "At Northwest-Shoals, we feel it is our responsibility to provide this community with the opportunity for training. Education is vital to improved living standards and continued fiscal growth for our area," stated NW-SCC President, Humphrey Lee.
According to Joel Parris, NW-SCC Financial Aid Director, the college recognizes there is a compelling need to respond rapidly to meet the needs of these displaced workers and the tuition waiver makes it possible to begin their retraining sooner. "Delayed approval time is often an issue with some assistance programs. This waiver makes it possible for the former Tiffin Motor Homes employees to initiate their retraining whil awaiting further assistance."
The tuition waiver is restricted to displaced workers of Tiffin Motor Homes who are not eligible to receive funding under Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) or other similiar and/or related state and/or federal workforce assistance programs; and for whom substantial tuition assistance cannot be secured from other sources.

June 18, 2008 - NW-SCC is proud to be a sponsor of the Annie Blackburn Arts Festival
Muscle Shoals, AL -- Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) is a proud sponsor of the upcoming Annie Blackburn Arts Festival to be held July 2-5, 2008 in the Florence Middle School.
What began as a few instructional classes for the residents of "The Shoals" area is now one of the only festivals dedicated to honoring creativity with working professionals at the helm. The Annie Blackburn Arts Festival provides creative arts workshops & classes taught by professionals from Los Angeles, CA, New York, NY and Atlanta, GA in the disciplines of visual arts, dance, modeling, acting and digital editing.
Named for respected resident of the area, Annie Blackburn, The Annie Blackburn's Arts Festival pays tribute to a woman, who for over 90 years encouraged a community to give back and to dream beyond boundaries.
According to Cedric Pendleton, a seasoned actor and native of Florence whose credits include roles on House of Payne, The Shield, and NYPD Blue, along with several television and film appearances, Annie Blackburn was a woman who possessed a strong spirit and the ability to give back. "Although she never had children of her own, she never missed an opportunity to inspire people in the community to give of themselves, their time and their talents. This festival is a wonderful way to honor her legacy and introduce this area to the grand stage that is Hollywood," stated Pendleton. Cedric and his brother Michi Pendleton, an accomplished visual artist whose work has been displayed at The High Museum of Art (Atlanta) and commissioned by Toyota Motor Corporation and The Coca-Cola Company, will direct workshops and classes during the festival.
Organizers of The Annie Blackburn Art Festival believe the festival holds a great deal of promise, as the Pendleton brothers note, "There are many cultural spheres that exist outside of Hollywood and we want to grow this festival in the same way that Sundance has grown." It is places like Florence that remind us of the pioneers who dared to dream, and thus sparked changes in music, expression and learning. We want to encourage people to keep nurturing dreamers."
The Annie Blackburn Arts Festival was developed by these Florence, AL natives in partnership with Footprint Entertainment, Inc., of Atlanta, GA. The Annie Blackburn Arts Festival is sponsored by Northwest-Shoals Community College, TNT Fireworks, Tortillas Blanco Chips, Holt Musselman Kelly and Morgan Attorneys, HW Lewis Food Equipment, Dick Howell's BBQ, and NuLook Barbershop.

"Distance education courses offer you the convenience of working around your schedule from the comfort of your own home or wherever you may be. It's a viable tool right now as evidenced by the growing number of people utilizing it," added McGill.
Many options are available to students through distance education. Web courses provide students with the capability to complete course work through a web site developed by the instructor. In addition to the online courses, blended courses are available that combine online videotaped lectures in DVD format for students to watch at home or while traveling. Teleweb courses combine videotape and online instruction so that students are exposed to a variety of activities in completing assignments.
