2008-2009 Season Outlook

Northwest-Shoals Women’s Basketball will hit the hardwood with experience, depth, and speed.  The Patriot’s will bring in experience from seven sophomores that were major contributors in the 07-08, 24-9 record and State Championship Runner-Up finish. Returning will be leading scorer, All State Tournament Team and All-Region guard, Whitley Mayberry as well as leading rebounder Jewell Kinlaw in the post.  Assisting Mayberry at the perimeter will be athletic point guard Chasity StoverStover finished the season with a solid state tournament performance to carry into the sophomore season.

Mayberry, Kinlaw, and Stover will provide great quickness on both ends of the floor and leadership for the Patriots.

Kinlaw will have help in the paint from sophomore post players Hope Davidson, Kendra Hood, Antoinette Chavous, and transfer Meagan Mullen.  Each will bring great strength and size to the paint as well as perimeter shooting.   Davidson led the team with steals last season and among the top with rebounds and scoring.  Hood is a physical player in the lane and last season was also among the top with rebounds and scoring. Chavous is coming back from a knee injury suffered during the freshman year and getting stronger each day.  Chavous is a post/guard, with ball handling skill, outside shooting ability, and in the paint demonstrates great post moves.  Mullen is transferring in from a well coached Birmingham-Southern program bringing in experience and leadership.

The NWS Coaching staff is excited about the talented freshmen group coming in this season.  This group is very well rounded, athletic, and displays a winning attitude.  With only two returning guards from last year’s squad, Mayberry and Stover will be looking for the freshmen class to step up quick.  Assisting Stover at the point will be very athletic freshman, China McDanielMcDaniel fits into the Patriot style of play with great quickness to push the tempo and slash the lane for the dish or the score.  Phil Campbell High School stand out Chasity Morgan will also be a factor at the point guard position.  Morgan sees the floor exceptional well for the open players, a solid outside threat, and brings size to the point.  Supporting Mayberry at the two guard are talented Erin Parrish, Tamara Robinson, and Paige Hood.  All three bring much needed size to the perimeter, strong outside shooting and hustle.  The three guard is rounded out by Sheffield High School stand out Jasmine HorneHorne is a very explosive player to the basket and will flourish in the run and gun, up-tempo style of play by the Patriots.  Assisting Horne are Larrisha “ReRe” Bell and Jericka KinlawBell at 5’9 is very athletic, has huge leaping ability, and demonstrates great skill getting to the basket for the score.  Jericka Kinlaw at 6’0 is a forceful defensive player and will help set the tempo on the defensive end.  Kinlaw’s size and speed on the perimeter will be a match up factor for the opposing teams.

The freshmen post players, 6’2 Jessica Hathcock, 6’1 Kayla “KB” Burden, and Naunnie Campbell, have size and excellent scoring ability.  Campbell a former track stand out runs the floor exceptional well and a shot blocker threat in the lane.  Burden is a post with guard skills which will be a key factor in the Patriots four out one in offense.  Hathcock is an aggressive scorer in the paint, with solid moves and outside shooting ability.

This squad is very talented and excited about the upcoming season, they have high expectations and their goal is set.  The Coaching staff already senses a good chemistry for this group and the ability is there, now the work will begin!
