Tommy Dillon was introduced as the new head coach of the
Northwest-Shoals Community College Patriots on March 22, 2007.
Dillon comes to the Patriots after working as an assistant coach at many
of the top programs on the Division I, Division II, NAIA, and Junior
College level. Coach Dillon can be described as a journeyman in the
coaching industry but now he has found a new home with the Patriots.
Most
recently, he spent the 2006-2007 season at Columbus State University
with head coach Doug Branson. Dillon helped the Cougars to a 17- 12
record and a conference semi-final appearance.
Before going to Columbus State University, Dillon was an assistant coach
at Tallahassee Community College (2005-2006), for Head Coach Eddie
Barnes, where he helped the Eagles to a #2 national ranking in the
nation’s final poll and finished as the National Tournament Runner-up.
The Eagles went 31-3 on the season winning both the Region VIII regular
season and the FCAAA State Tournament Championship.
Dillon served as an assistant coach on the Kentucky State staff in
Frankfort, Kentucky and before that was an assistant coach at Georgetown
College in Georgetown, Kentucky (2001-2002; 2002-2003). Under Coach
Happy Osborne, Dillon helped the tigers to a #1 ranking in the NAIA
national polls both seasons. The tigers also appeared in the elite
eight and sweet sixteen of the NAIA national tournament. Dillon helped
the tigers to two consecutive Mid South Conference regular season
Championships, one Mid South Conference Tournament Championship and one
Mid South Conference runner-up. The tigers in 2001-2002 had a 25 game
winning streak with a season record 35-2. In 2002-2003 Georgetown went
32-6 on the season.
Prior
to Georgetown College, Dillon served as an assistant coach at Eastern
Kentucky University (EKU) (2000-2001) under Coach Travis Ford (currently
Head coach at University of Massachusetts). Dillon helped the colonels
with a top 50 recruiting class according to street and smiths’
magazine. EKU won more games during the 2000-2001 season than the
previous 3 seasons combined. Not only was EKU successful on the court
but the Colonels success off the court was outstanding with the highest
team GPA since records were kept at EKU.
1998-1999 and 1999-2000 seasons, Dillon served as the assistant coach at
Wallace Community College of Dothan under previously mentioned Eddie
Barnes (currently Tallahassee Community College Head Coach). While at
Wallace, Dillon helped lead the Governors to tremendous success with a
two season record of 52-14 in the Alabama Community College Conference.
The Governors were ranked as high as 3rd in the nation both
seasons. Wallace (1998-1999) finished in the semi-finals of the Region
XXII Junior College Tournament. Wallace (1999-2000) finished as the
runner-up of the Region XXII Junior College Tournament. Dillon was
responsible for all aspects of the Wallace program including:
recruiting, scouting, conditioning, on-floor coaching and individual
instruction.
Dillon, 37, earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from
Flagler College. He played his college basketball at previously
mentioned Eastern Kentucky University from 1989-1991 before a knee
injury ended his playing career. Dillon was a walk-on his first season
and earned scholarships both athletically and academically the following
season. Not only did Dillon play College Basketball, but he was also a
part of the EKU Colonels Tennis team 1988-1991.
A
native of Winchester, Kentucky, Dillon played high school basketball,
football and tennis at George Rogers Clark High School.
Dillon is married to the former Victoria Egalite of Lexington,
Kentucky. They have three dogs, two German Shepherds (Dakota and Dixie)
and a cute beagle mix (Buster).
